Anticoagulant Rodenticides and Wildlife (Emerging Topics in Ecotoxicology) de Nico W. van den Brink,John E. Elliott,Richard F. Shore,Barnett A. Rattner

Descripción - Reseña del editor Commensal rodents pose health risks and cause substantial damage to property and food supplies. Rats have also invaded islands and pose a serious threat to native wildlife, particularly raptors and seabirds. Estimates of total damage from introduced rats range into the billions of dollars in developed countries. This book aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the scientific advancements in the assessment of exposure, effects and risks that currently used rodenticides may pose to non-target organisms in the environment, along with practical guidance for characterization of hazards. This will be discussed in relation to their efficacy, and the societal needs for rodent control, and discussion of  risk mitigation and development of alternatives. The flow in the book is planned as: a.    introduction and setting the scene b.    problem description (risks and effects on non-targets and secondary poisoning, development of resistance) c.  ;  alternatives, regulation and risk mitigation d.    conclusions and recommendations Contraportada Commensal rodents consume and spoil crops and food supplies, cause  property damage and can be vectors for disease. Rats have also invaded islands and can pose a serious threat to native wildlife, particularly seabirds. Estimates of rodent damage range into the billions of dollars in developed countries. In southern Asia, rodents are estimated to consume or destroy annually sufficient rice to feed 50 million people. The predominant control method for pest rodents in most countries is  anticoagulant rodenticides, which are antagonists of vitamin K metabolism that prevent blood-clotting and cause fatal haemorrhage. This mode of toxicity is common to all vertebrates because of their shared blood clotting mechanism, so anticoagulants pose a potential risk to a wide range of non-target species. This is well recognised and anticoagulants fail regulatory environmental risk assessments in many jurisdictions. Nonetheless, the compounds continue to be heavily used because of the societal need for rodent control and the limited availability of safer alternatives.  As a result, exposure of non-target species is commonplace throughout the world and reflects the extensive use, persistence and bioaccumulation potential of many of these compounds. The consequences of such exposure, in terms of effects on wildlife populations, remain uncertain and the subject of much research, debate and controversy.  Accordingly, there is a  significant and ongoing need for integrated assessment of the threats to wildlife from anticoagulant rodenticides, combined with development of governance, mitigation measures and development of alternatives. Anticoagulant Rodenticides and Wildlife: Concluding ~ Alternatives are available, including non-anticoagulant rodenticides, but these may also pose significant risk to environmental organisms, humans and pets. There are also various mitigation measures that can be implemented when using ARs, including bait protection, pulsed baiting at the onset of infestation, restricting use by non-professionals, and avoiding use in areas of high non-target .

The Dangers of Anticoagulant Poisons – WildLIFE ~ Chronic anticoagulant rodenticide exposure may predispose birds to adverse growth rates, alterations in their physiology, and suppressed immunity. Monitoring of wildlife rodenticide concentrations, such as through deceased hospital and rehabilitation animals, may be useful in understanding and addressing this issue in wildlife.

Anticoagulant Rodenticides (Warfarin and Congeners ~ Potentially dangerous to all mammals and birds, anticoagulant rodenticides are a common cause of poisoning in pets and wildlife. Intoxications in domestic animals have resulted from contamination of feed with anticoagulant concentrate, malicious use of these chemicals, and feed mixed in equipment used to prepare rodent bait.

Anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity to non-target wildlife ~ Much of our understanding of anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity to non-target wildlife has been derived from molecular through whole animal research and registration studies in domesticated birds and mammals, and to a lesser degree from trials with captive wildlife. Using these data, an adverse outcome pathway identifying molecular initiating and anchoring events (inhibition of vitamin K .

Anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning in dogs / Vetlexicon ~ Anticoagulant rodenticides available commercially in cereal-based baits at a concentration of 0.005%. Some professional-use products may be at concentrations as high as 0.1%. Second generation anticoagulants are more toxic in repeated small doses than a single dose. Cause: ingestion of contaminated bait → blocks action of Vitamin K1.

Interspecific and geographical differences in ~ 1. Introduction. The diet of many wild predators is based on rodents that are commonly the target of campaigns for control or eradication with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), which makes these predators susceptible to secondary poisoning by AR-contaminated prey (Brakes and Smith, 2005, Sage et al., 2008, Rattner et al., 2014b).In the last decades, several studies have been performed that .

Anticoagulant rodenticides and wildlife: Concluding remarks ~ Rodents are known to affect human society globally in various adverse ways, resulting in a widespread demand for their continuous control. Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) have been, and currently remain, the cornerstone of rodent control throughout the world. Although alternative control methods exist, they are generally less effective. ARs work by affecting vitamin K metabolism, thereby .

Animals / Free Full-Text / Anticoagulant Rodenticides ~ Anticoagulant rodenticides are used to manage rodents in domestic, municipal, agricultural, and conservation settings. In mammals and birds, anticoagulant poisoning causes extensive hemorrhagic disruption, with the primary cause of death being severe internal bleeding occurring over days. The combined severity and duration of these effects represent poor welfare outcomes for poisoned animals.
